Incorporating the unique experiences and perspectives of patients in health research helps ensure that research questions, methods, and outcomes reflect real-world priorities and the needs of patients. To achieve this and produce high-quality research that encourages change and innovation, direct partnership with patients is essential. By prioritizing the development of meaningful relationships between patients and members of the research team, health research becomes more accessible, patient-centered, and impactful.

These partnerships, based on collaboration and shared learning, recognize patients’ journeys through injury and recovery as a valuable source of expertise alongside academic and clinical knowledge.
This article explores the physical, emotional, and psychological challenges of one of our dedicated partners, Debra Marvel, as she reflects on her orthopaedic journey and role as a patient partner.
